Studying about that good old way…

February 26-28, 2016

Arequipa, Peru

I arrived in Arequipa to meet a friend I had met in Cusco and traveled to Machu Picchu with.  Arequipa is a nice little town but there’s not that much to do here besides use it as a pass through for the Colca Canyon. Unfortunately, we didn’t build in enough time to make it to Colca Canyon so we just decided to explore Arequipa.  There are many nice cathedrals and a very nice Plaza de Armas here (I think there is one in every South American city…each and every one…no matter how big or small)

However, the Santa Catalina Monastery is Arequipa’s crowning glory.  While studying about the good old way at this monastery, I learned that it is really fun to photograph old monasteries! Everything was so vivid and colorful and old!  I especially liked the ovens…I’m not sure why.

Besides the monastery, the other thing that struck out to me was the food.  My friend and I found some amazing pasta near the main square at a little cafe called Capriccio.  It was so good we went back twice. We also went to a more upscale restaurant called Zig Zag which was absolutely amazing.  My friend ordered some Alpaca and I tried some.  FYI, it tastes like beef.

I had Quinoa Gnocchi!

We did also do a city tour where we got to see Volcan El Misti and Chachani. I got to ride a horse for 10 minutes, there were cute little girls in fancy dresses and I saw a peacock!

    • Yeah, I figure there should be some proof that I went to some of these places right? This horse riding was kind of lame actually. It was honestly only ten minutes and they basically rode us past fields of garbage. I guess that’s what you get for 10 soles. I’ve done one other horseback riding trip and that was much much better. I’ll post about that one day…one day.
